History of the Ford F-150 | Bob Tomes Ford

Ford’s “Return to Park” feature on all 2017 Ford Fusions via a new rotary gear shift dial.

“Return to Park”

The 2017 Fusion will feature special software that utilizes data from an extensive network of sensors in the vehicle to detect if a driver intends to exit the vehicle. This technology will be used in the event the driver leaves the vehicle and park has not been selected. This is offered as safety and peace of mind - even when the vehicle is left in gear and the Fusion detects the driver’s exit, the vehicle will engage as a safety measure. This is yet another safety innovation that Ford has offered to ensure peace of mind.

Return to Park will automatically engage the vehicle into park when these conditions occur:

  • You turn the vehicle off

  • Your safety belt is unlatched with the driver’s door open and the vehicle stationary

  • You open the driver’s door with your safety belt unlatched and the Fusion stationary

Ford worked hard to introduce this feature to assist drivers and reduce potential for vehicle rollaways. Vehicle rollaways occur when the driver exits the vehicle with the engine running and the transmission not in park. The technology is also designed not to operate if the vehicle is moving slowly and a driver briefly opens the door to free a jacket stuck in the door.
